School From Scratch

The School From Scratch Framework

Imagine you find out your community is building a facility with the sole purpose of helping people achieve their goals. Whether their goal is a career change, career skills, getting in shape, learning a language, learning an instrument, learning how to garden or how to fix a car everything is acceptable. It will be staffed with people who are experts in various fields along with resources such as a chemistry lab, recording studio, language labs, fitness equipment, etc. Access to this facility is totally free and people are not required to use it in any preassigned way other than to follow general rules of public behavior. The staff's only mandate is that it uses its immense brain power to try and help as many people as they can achieve their desired goals by doing things such as forming support groups, suggesting information resources and generally doing whatever they can to help. No matter what the person is interested in, the staff tries to help with no judgment or malice.

What percentage of the community do you imagine would take advantage of this resource?

1. The Thimble

Everyone only uses a thimble of knowledge to succeed in life - not an ocean. Despite 13 years and 11,000 hours of schooling, nearly all adults build their careers, health, and relationships on just one or two deeply learned skills. The rest - biology facts, geometry proofs, historical dates - is forgotten trivia with no practical impact. Mastery beats breadth every time. A thimble is achievable by anyone from any background in a fraction of the time the current system demands. One skill. Focused. Fast. Free. The thimble doesn't just make success achievable. It makes it imaginable for people who never imagined it before.

2. After School Activities

The best example of successful school without force is right at school itself. After school activities are voluntary, well attended, and people say they get a lot out of them. They cover essentially everything studied in regular classes but people do it voluntarily. The same kids who are disengaged in mandatory classes become passionate and focused when the force is removed. Are cell phones a problem in after school activities? If not explain why. That answer exposes everything about the current system.

3. Force Has a Perfect Negative Record

Force never produced a single positive outcome that voluntary engagement wouldn't have produced better. Every person who succeeded did so because of internal drive. Every person who failed did so despite the force or because of it. Force doesn't motivate — it produces compliance, resentment, and the association of learning with pain. The proof is everywhere. The kid who hated reading in school who devoured books the summer after graduation. The person who couldn't do math under pressure who handles their finances just fine. Remove the force and the person was there all along.

4. The Poor Communities

The people who should be most excited about this plan are those in the poorest communities.

It only takes one skill set to completely change a person's life. That skill needs to be neither intellectually challenging nor terribly time consuming. It only needs to provide self sufficiency.

Most people base their entire career on one skill set. This means anyone from any background has a legitimate chance because what they need is very small and uncomplicated.

We don't need to throw more money at it or hire more people with advanced degrees.

We need to ditch the elitism in favor of trying to help.

5. The Single Most Important Question

Can learning for the masses occur at the highest level without coercion?

If yes then continuing to use force is morally indefensible. Every day the current system operates is a day we're damaging people's relationship with learning for no justifiable reason.

If no then defenders must explain why all the vital knowledge people acquire through voluntary means throughout their lives can't be expanded to all areas of learning. Why the gym works without force. Why the library works without force. Why after school activities work without force.

They can't.

The goal is success. The ocean nobody retained is imaginary. Quality of life runs on health money and relationships. The thimble is enough for anyone. Force is the poison that was never the cure.

Connect those honestly and only one conclusion is possible.

School from scratch.
